Gas water heater replacement is removing an existing gas-fired unit that's failed or aging out and installing a new one in its place. Unlike a straightforward repair, replacement means dealing with the full connection setup again – gas line, venting, water connections, and the relief valve – and it's the point where a unit's age or condition makes another repair not worth the money.
Signs you're looking at replacement rather than repair: the tank is ten or more years old and showing performance issues, it's leaking from the tank itself rather than a fitting, the pilot light or burner assembly keeps failing despite repairs, or recovery time has gotten noticeably worse even after maintenance. A gas water heater that's rusting at the bottom of the tank is a clear sign the tank itself is failing, and no repair fixes that.
We start by disconnecting and safely removing the old unit, checking the existing gas line and venting for adequacy with the new unit's requirements. If you're staying with a similar size and type, the existing infrastructure often works with minor adjustments. If you're upsizing or switching to a higher-efficiency model, we may need to modify gas line sizing or venting to match. The new unit gets installed with correct connections, and every gas fitting gets pressure tested before we finish, along with confirming proper venting and draft before the job is considered done.
Cost depends on tank size, whether you're staying with a similar unit or upgrading, and whether existing gas and venting infrastructure needs any modification. Homes in Jericho, VT with older gas lines sometimes need a line upsize if the new unit has higher BTU demands than the old one.
